Orthotropics®

What is Orthotropics®?
Orthotropics means to guide growth. Orthodontics means to straighten teeth. We work with the growing child, indeed as soon as problems are identified, to develop the jaws and accomodate the teeth, rather than extracting permanent teeth to alleviate crowding. This creates more space for the teeth and tongue, resulting not only in aligned teeth, but also a healthier airway, broader smile, and more attractive facial features.

How is Orthotropics® different than Orthodontics?
Traditional orthodontics utilizes braces, and sometimes extractions to align the teeth, typically waiting until all the permanent teeth are in place. Where traditional orthodontics pull the teeth back (or retract) to fix a misaligned bite, Orthotropics position the teeth forward which opens airways and can prevent the need for jaw surgery and extractions of permanent teeth.

Signs your child could benefit from Orthotropics include:
  • Clenching of teeth
  • Mouth breathing
  • Little or no space between baby teeth
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Resting open mouth posture when not sleeping, eating or drinking
  • Headaches
  • Heavy breathing

Early Intervention — less than 6 years old...
Did you know that those dental problems you see in children like crowded teeth, cross-bites, mouth breathing, and tooth grinding, can be a part of a larger health problem? These findings often go hand-in-hand with snoring, ADHD, sleep walking, and wetting the bed — all signs of an airway problem in a child.

We don't want to supervise illness, we want to restore health. By recognizing and intervening in these growth issues early on, we can normalize children's dental development and their health. In fact, there was a 50% increase in learning and behavioral issues, and a decrease of 10 IQ points by the age of 7, in children with airway issues. - Avon Longitudinal Study 2012.
